Elizabeth Gilbert: Biography

Elizabeth Gilbert, an American writer and author of the bestselling book "Eat, Pray, Love", was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1969. Her father was a chemical engineer, and her mother was a nurse. Gilbert grew up with her sister, writer and historian Catherine Gilbert-Murdock, on a small family farm in Litchfield, Connecticut, where they grew Christmas trees.

Living in a region without neighbors and without a television or even a record player, Gilbert and her sister spent their time reading and entertaining themselves by writing small books and plays. In 1991, Gilbert received a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from New York University, after which she worked as a cook, waitress, and journalist. She wrote short stories about her culinary experiences and briefly mentioned them in her book "The Last American Man" (2002).

In 1993, Esquire magazine published Gilbert's story "Pilgrims" under the headline "The Debut of an American Writer." She became the first unpublished writer to debut in Esquire since Norman Mailer. This led to her consistent work as a journalist for various national magazines, including SPIN, GQ, The New York Times Magazine, Allure, Real Simple, and Travel + Leisure.

As stated in her memoir "Eat, Pray, Love", Gilbert made a career as a highly paid freelance writer. Her article "The Muse of the Coyote Ugly Saloon", published in GQ in 1997, about her time working as a waitress at the first Coyote Ugly dance bar in East Village, became the basis for the movie "Coyote Ugly". In 1998, Gilbert also adapted her GQ article about the biography of modern naturalist "Eustace Conway Doesn't Live Like You" into "The Last American Man". The book was nominated for the National Book Award in the nonfiction category.

Her article "Ghost", a biography of Hank Williams III, published in GQ in 2000, was included in the anthology "The Best American Magazine Writing 2001". Elizabeth Gilbert continues to write and inspire readers worldwide with her unique storytelling and introspective works.

David sedaris author biography David has since settled in a small French village with his partner, Hugh Hamrick, and has become a critically acclaimed author of autobiographical books such as "Santaland Diaries," "Me Talk Pretty One Day," and "Naked."
