After appearing on Broadway and in the soap opera "Love of Life," Reeve landed the iconic role of Superman in the 1978 film. He reprised the role in three sequels, but the comic book character overshadowed his desire to pursue more diverse acting opportunities.

In March 1995, Reeve suffered a devastating injury when he fell from a horse during a competition. He became permanently paralyzed, but his spirit remained unbroken. He continued his humanitarian work with the Creative Coalition, hosted the Oscars ceremony in 1997 while in his wheelchair, and directed the television drama "In the Gloaming."
