Cliff Robertson: A Lifetime in Acting

Cliff Robertson, an American actor, has had a television and film career that has spanned nearly half a century. In 1968, he won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film "Charly". In addition to his Oscars, Emmys, and numerous other achievements, he was immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (located at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard). To younger generations, he is known for his portrayal of the elderly Ben Parker in the "Spider-Man" film series.

Early Life and Career

Clifford Parker Robertson III was born on September 9, 1925, in La Jolla, California, to Audrey and Clifford Parker Robertson II. He attended Antioch College in Ohio and worked as a journalist for some time. In high school, Robertson earned the nickname "The Walking Phoenix," which can be interpreted as either "Wandering Phoenix" or "Walking Miracle."

Portraying John F. Kennedy

Robertson was specifically chosen by John F. Kennedy to portray the future U.S. President in the film "PT 109" (1963). He also portrayed Kennedy as a presidential candidate in the film "The Best Man" (1964). His breakthrough role came in the film "Charly," for which he received the Academy Award for Best Actor.

In addition to "Charly," Robertson has appeared in numerous other notable films, including "Picnic" (1955), "Sunday in New York" (1963), "Autumn Leaves" (1956), "Too Late the Hero" (1970), "Three Days of the Condor" (1975), "Obsession" (1976), "J.W. Robertson's television credits include roles in the series "The Eleventh Hour" (1963), "The Twilight Zone" (1963), "Breaking Point" (1963), and "The Greatest Show on Earth". He won an Emmy Award in 1965 for his role in an episode of "Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre." In 1989, he voiced a commercial for AT&T and worked as a sales representative for the company for ten years.

Personal Life and Hobbies

From 1966 to 1986, Robertson was married to actress Dina Merrill. His hobbies include flying, and he has a small collection of airplanes, including World War II-era aircraft such as the "Havilland Tiger Moths," "Messerschmitt Bf 109," and " Supermarine Spitfire MK923."
