Biography

Edmund Anthony Cutlar Purdom was "an English actor, voice artist, and director. He worked first on stage in Britain, performing various works by Shakespeare, then later in America on Broadway, until making his way to Hollywood, and eventually spent the remainder of his life appearing in Italian cinema. He is perhaps best known for his starring role in 1954's historical epic The Egyptian. By taking over important roles exited by Mario Lanza and Marlon Brando, Purdom was known by the mid-1950s as "The Replacement Star". Between the 1970s and 90s, he was a regular in European genre cinema, working with directors like Juan Piquer Simón, Joe D'Amato, Sergio Martino, Ruggero Deodato."[1]

Edmond was born in 1926 in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England.[2] He received his education at St. Augustine's Abbey School, Ramsgate, Kent, then by the Jesuits at St. Ignatius Grammar School and Welwyn Garden City Grammar School.

Edmund was married four times and divorced three times.

He married Anita Phillips in January 1951 in Kensington, London, England.[3] She was the mother of his children: Lilan and Mariana. Anita and Edmond were divorced in 1956.

He married Alicia Darr,[4] a native of Poland, 9 April 1957 in Manhattan, New York.[5] They had a rocky marriage. On 17 August 61 Alicia filed for divorce from Purdom in Juarez, Mexico, and announced her plans to marry Singer sewing machine heir Alfred Corning Clarke of New York.[6]

He married the Mexican actress Linda Christian 24 March 1962 in Mexico City. "Actress Linda Christian, widow of Tyrone Power, said Friday she will marry British actor Edmund Purdom Saturday night. Miss Christian said they will go to Acapulco for the honeymoon and from there to Los Angeles, before continuing on to Europe."[7] The marriage was short-lived. The next year, Christian filed for an annulment: "Hollywood (AP)--Linda Christian, describing herself as 'truly sorry,' says she has filed for a Mexican annulment of her brief marriage to actor Edmund Purdom. Miss Christian, 48, and Purdom, 27, married last March. She said Wednesday the annulment petition was file din a little town near Mexico City and may already have been granted. She said Purdom, now in London, was informed of the annulment action."[8]

In 2000 he married his fourth wife, the photographer Vivienne Purdom.

He passed away in 2009. [9][10]

Los Angeles Times Obituary:[11]

Edmund Purdom, 84, the British actor who came to Hollywood in the 1950s and starred in the "The Egyptian" and "The Prodigal," died Jan. 1 in Rome, according to his family, who did not announce the cause of death.
The son of a drama critic, Purdom was born Dec. 19, 1924, in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England. He attended St. Ignatius College before started his acting career in 1945. According to an obituary in the Guardian newspaper, he appeared on Broadway six years later in alternating performances of "Caesar and Cleopatra" and "Antony and Cleopatra."
One of his first film roles was in "Julius Caesar" in 1953, playing Strato, the servant of Brutus, who was played by James Mason. Still little known a year later, he was selected to replace the fired Mario Lanza in "The Student Prince." The overweight Lanza had recorded the songs for the production before filming began so his voice was dubbed in for Purdom's in the film.
Purdom later was cast in a starring role in "The Egyptian," after Marlon Brando turned down the part for another film.
Purdom's relationship with actress Linda Christian, the former wife of Tyrone Power whom Purdom had starred with in the film "Athena", made headlines when they were wed in 1962. The union ended in divorce after little more than a year.
As work in Hollywood dried up, Purdom moved to Rome and appeared in a number of Italian costume dramas and, later in life, did voice-over work.
